Tanner

being the biggest is kind of surprising to me. Cuz 12 meters doesn't sound that big. Doesn't Not really. I

Sups

mean, I,

Tanner

I

Andi

That's like 40 feet.

Tanner

Yeah. Was it always underwater or has it gone

Sups

underwater? right. right. Very good question.

Andi

so how long's the channel? Because that's really like, that's the only way I could know if this were a lie or not.

Sups

Right?

Andi

hate the hot, I hate sand and I hate being wet. So the beach is the worst Hello and welcome to this episode of the I Should Have Known podcast, the trivia podcast that can't be trusted. Each week our Quizmaster presents you with four big facts on a topic, but one of those facts is a lie, and we're continuing to dive under the sea for this month. And our, host today is Sups.

Sups

Hello.

Andi

Sups is going to be presenting us with four superlative facts. under the sea. So all of his facts will have a kind of s or best or most But we have to remember that one of those facts is a lie. So join me, Andi, and our other host Tanner in figuring out which one it is.

Tanner

let's suit up.

Sups

Let's get started with the low hanging fruit of the week. which ocean is the deepest?

Andi

Oh, like average depth? Mm-hmm. Or like has the deepest point.

Sups

Deepest point.

Tanner

So that's the Marianna's trench. Yeah. Where the Challenger deep

Sups

Correct.

Andi

Which is in the Pacific.

Sups

It is Pacific. It's 11,022 meters.

Andi

Yeah.

Tanner

deep. pretty deep.

Andi

deep.

Sups

Yeah. Pretty

Andi

deep. Deepest point on the earth. We did an episode on like. Earth superlatives And that included some fun facts about the challenger.

Tanner

Yeah. Some terrifying. Yeah. Deep, deep

Andi

Oh yeah.

Sups

All right. Fact number one, hanging Ocean Kingdom in China has the world's largest underwater viewing dome.

Tanner

Whoa.

Andi

Oh boy.

Tanner

Underwater viewing dome. That sounds really scary.

Andi

it's just a dome under the water. Exactly. Like an aquarium.

Sups

Yeah. So this one's situated in the Quang. Province in China, it's actually a part of a theme park, which opened in 2014 actually has five Guinness world

Tanner

Mm-hmm. Mm-hmm.

Sups

The theme park also has a total water volume of 48.75 million liters of water. Whoa. If you can't imagine how much

Andi

at a certain point, those numbers just become nonsense. It doesn't

Tanner

just a big bucket.

Sups

And that also makes it the world's largest aquarium. Wow. there is the whale shark exhibit, which features the underwater viewing dome has an external diameter of 12 meters.

Andi

Okay,

Tanner

so now we have some size to it. Yes.

Andi

So the dome's diameter is 12 meters.

Sups

Mm-hmm. Exactly.

Andi

All right, Sounds pretty cool. Yeah. The fact that as in China, Fits. Cause I feel like they had built a lot of very superlative kind of things like this now. Mm-hmm. Dubai would've been my other guess from my fake location if I were to invent this. Yes. I had originally thought that like they just built a dome under the real ocean, but I'm not realizing that's way harder than building a dome and then putting a tank over top of

Tanner

that. That was gonna be my question. How do you build a dry dome

Andi

You build the dome and then you fill it with water. Yeah. that makes sense. Yeah. Also, the whale shark thing. This is like a thing in East Asia. I don't know if a lot of know that. They're like pretty common in aquariums in East Asia Yeah. To po whale sharks,

Tanner

But it's really hard to keep them alive in an

Andi

aquariums. Yeah. They hate it. Yeah. Yeah. The island we lived on in Korea, they built an aqua park and their big draw was Aw. whale shark and they had put the whale shark on all the ads. Mm-hmm. it's the logo, like the mascot is a SW shark and I think it lived like a month. Yeah. It was very sad. But this tank is much bigger. I guess that's maybe,

Sups

yeah. So this Guang province is actually just off the coast off the island of Macau. Okay.

Andi

it fits the vibe of that region.

Tanner

believable that it exists, but 12 meters for an underwater dome being the biggest is kind of surprising to me. Cuz 12 meters doesn't sound that big. Doesn't Not really. I

Sups

mean, I,

Tanner

I

Andi

That's like 40 feet.

Tanner

Yeah.

Andi

So I guess that would be the thing. The other, one would probably be someplace that he thinks we would know. Yeah. So like, does Epcot have a dome road? Yeah. You know what I mean? Like, oh, you should know it's in Disney or something. So like that's maybe where it is. Yeah.

Tanner

I could totally see that. But otherwise it sounds perfectly believable.

Andi

Yeah. It sounds like US theme park humans were built.

Sups

Okay, so we move on to fact number two. Mm-hmm. The only underwater post office in the world is in Vanuatu.

Tanner

Whoa.

Andi

So the most underwaters post office. Oh, to make it a superlative, right? Yeah. Yeah.

Tanner

I know Vanuatu is one of those island nations that's really at risk of like You know, going underwater because of climate change. Was it always underwater or has it gone

Sups

underwater? right. right. Very good question. So this opened in May, 2003 in the Hideaway Island Marine Sanctuary. And they opened it to show as a symbol that for that country, the ocean life is so important for

Andi

the survivor mm-hmm.

Tanner

And how

Andi

a post office.

Sups

Yes which

Andi

fish can send those letters. Yeah, I like that.

Sups

So the post office is submerged 10 feet below, and divers and s snor killers can leave waterproof postcards. So they have a special postcard. It has a special emblem so that it doesn't get smudged. opening hours are posted every day. At the beach with like a flag is flown to know that there is someone

Andi

Oh yeah. It's like, like at your mailbox, you put your flag up when there's a letter in size. So the flag is up, means that the postmaster is, on duty. Yeah. Mm-hmm.

Sups

And, If the postmaster isn't on duty, then there's also a post box, so you can just go and leave your postcard there

Andi

I also like the idea of like, Two people going underwater and being like, no, you need this stamp. Because you never go to the post office and it's like you're trying to mail something and it never actually works. You're like,

Sups

no,

Andi

need this kind of stamp, but then you can't say that. So you have to like sign about

Tanner

it. I would definitely go there to mail packages cuz when they weigh them, isn't it gonna be cheaper?

Sups

different.

Andi

Yes.

Sups

That's, that's one way to look at it. And, and there's a lot of cruise ships that go around the area, and that's like their biggest customer base.

Tanner

from Vanuatu.

Sups

Mm-hmm. That's awesome.

Andi

Do we think it's the only one?

Tanner

Hmm. probably, it's kind of a unique idea.

Andi

Honestly. I don't think it's even that. no. I feel like the moment people went underwater, they were like, what can we put down here? They were like, this is okay. This is boring. What do we put down here?

Tanner

Well, they have fish, so there's schools. post office though. That's gotta be one of the boringest buildings to build.

Sups

Yeah. Underwater. But it's not really a building, it's just like a one, structure. Yeah. Let's

Tanner

just

Sups

is just

Andi

submerge, like a I mean, I think it's like, it's like a fun idea. Mm-hmm. But I could also see other places doing it. Like

Tanner

This totally sounds like it could be in the Florida Keys. any beach place, you know, anywhere that there's a resort. This could be like a draw, Yeah. But I do like that they used it as like a symbol of like, we're tied to the water. It's part of our life. Yeah. So we even have, part of our government is in the water. Yeah,

Sups

Okay. Moving on. Fact number three. Maldives has the most underwater restaurants.

Tanner

Wow.

Andi

There's the highest number on her water. Restaurants. What, like

Tanner

There's so

Andi

many that

Tanner

have the most.

Sups

Okay. It's seven.

Tanner

Seven. Okay. Yeah.

Andi

right? Yeah. Yeah. Like definitely.

Sups

yeah. Okay. So the first underwater restaurant opened in 2005 as part of the Conrad hotels chain. The restaurant can take in like 14 people and has 270 degrees. Panoramic view. Just a year later in 2006, they built, the world's largest underwater restaurant called 5.8,

Andi

is it 5.8 meters under underwater? Oh yeah.

Tanner

Creative.

Sups

Very creative. It has a 360 degree panoramic view and is made of glass walls and ceilings. Maximum of 10 couples can dine there and the restaurant has a barefoot policy.

Tanner

it's not for swimming? No, it's like a basement. Right, right. It's like another level below. And then it's just the fact that it's surrounded by water. Mm-hmm. And so there's windows all over. You can see out into the water.

Sups

Correct. Okay. But

Andi

when you look, see you. You are not wet. Yes. I think is what people, that's what I You're not wet, you're dry, you're like in, in a

Tanner

Right? kind of thing. Yes.

Sups

And when I look office, you're wet. You're, you're wet cuz you are Yeah. Diving there is no What they did is they built it on the ground and then they

Andi

They just submerged it.

Sups

Yeah. okay. Okay. Yeah. As if this wasn't enough. Maldives is also home to the world's first underwater wine cellar, and

Tanner

does that even work?

Sups

What is the and they also have a underwater nightclub,

Tanner

Oh my God.

Andi

Just do everything underwater there. I mean, So like if you were to just build something on the actual ground, it would be partially submerged. So like, I guess that makes sense. Yeah. They have a lot of water to

Tanner

right? Yeah. Everything is

Sups

Indian ocean out there. Yeah. Yeah.

Andi

okay, I'm not a fan of the beach. I don't know if we've ever talked about this, but I hate the

Tanner

Well, you hate the hot.

Andi

hate the hot, I hate sand and I hate being wet. So the beach is the worst also. It's so boring. What do you do? I don't

Tanner

understand.

Andi

my other gripe with the beach mm-hmm. Is that they're the same everywhere.

Tanner

Right. The

Andi

We have sand, we have water, we have probably palm trees cuz humans have put them everywhere. Yeah. So like, At a certain point, this is why I don't understand these kind of resorts, cuz aren't they kind of all the same thing? Yeah. Right. So I get that. Like this is what they do to try to make their thing different is mm-hmm. but we have an underwater hotel or an underwater restaurant we're different. So then it's like worth going there. Exactly. So like that kind of makes, that

Sups

makes sense.

Tanner

Underwater restaurant.

Andi

And we think the most is in the Maldives, I mean, probably right.

Tanner

Some Island Nation.

Andi

Yeah. Make

Tanner

sense.

Andi

I'd rather be in a dry underwater restaurant than at that post office. So

Tanner

Yeah, because you don't have to get wet.

Sups

fact number four. The longest underwater rail and road tunnel will be between Germany and Denmark.

Tanner

Okay,

Andi

Will be.

Sups

Will be. So yet? No. Currently under construction, but when it eventually opens in 2029 between Germany and Denmark. the Fairmont Bell Belt. Tunnel will become the largest underwater rail and road tunnel It's going to be an 18 kilometer tunnel with double lane highways and two electric rail tracks. Mm-hmm. It'll link put garden in northern Germany to rpi Har on the Danish island of Lola land across the Fairmont belt in the Baltic Sea.

Tanner

So it's going to a Danish

Sups

island. Yes.

Tanner

It's not even going to.

Andi

Yeah, but No, But like denmark's, mostly islands. So like it's not a remote island. Right. It's probably

Tanner

connected with a bridge. Bridge, yeah.

Sups

the only way to navigate this route today, which is used by millions, is by ferry. Okay? And this tunnel will reduce the travel time by more than an hour. So, for example, Hamburg to Copenhagen. Will take about three hours by train as opposed to more than five hours today. And one can go through Denmark in about 10 minutes by car, or seven minutes by train, avoiding a 160 kilometer detour. Wow. So you can just cross the whole country. The current longest undersea road tunnel is the tunnel in Norway. It's about 14.3 kilometers, and it's also the deepest road tunnel, oh, wow. Yeah,

Andi

I mean, the location kind of makes sense. I could believe it. I haven't heard nothing about this. I know nothing about this, but like, it does kind of make sense that region There's a lot of water.

Tanner

I know there's a lot of fairies.

Andi

Yeah. It can be kind of annoying, like if you're going by land, cuz like we've thought about driving from Poland to Denmark and it is kind of annoying because you have to go like around, you have to sweep around through Germany. Mm-hmm. so like I get that. That would be useful. Mm-hmm.

Tanner

So the only other underwater tunnels I know about are the tunnel.

Andi

That's like the very famous one between the UK and France.

Sups

yeah.

Andi

I don't, is that longer? I don't know. Mm-hmm. You know, so like to try to figure out the lie. Yeah. He's saying this one will be longer than that. He's saying this other one is 14 kilometers, so how long's the channel? Because that's really like, that's the only way I could know if this were a lie or not. Right?

Sups

Right?

Tanner

And I know that there's, a rail because you can take a train Yeah. to France from Britain

Sups

it's not a road in rail tunnel. so they have three tunnels. These are for rail services. And then you have like a service lane for the trains. So it's not like you can just take a car and just drive across the tunnel. And so those were my four facts about underwater super

Andi

Yeah. Very interesting. All these things under the water. but one of them is a lie. can you repeat the four of them for us before Tanner and I try to take a guess at which one it is?

Sups

fact number one, Hank Ocean Kingdom in China has the world's largest underwater viewing dome Fact number two, the only underwater post office in the world is in Vanuatu. Fact number three, Maldives has the most underwater restaurants, and fact number four, the longest underwater rail and road tunnel will be between Germany and Denmark.

Tanner

All right, one of those is taking on water. Hmm.

Sups

I,

Andi

like It's really hard to guess or to know, like,

Tanner

right.

Andi

Oh, do I think it's in China? Okay. Where else would it be? Yeah, okay, I can name a few places where maybe it could be, but like, I wouldn't have known that.

Tanner

Yeah, I think that's true for a lot of them And the thing about them is that they've all been built by people, so it's just where do you build it? Yeah. You know? Yeah. It's not like, oh yeah, I know the tallest mountain is here. Or it would naturally be here. You know, this is constructed by humans, so it could be anywhere. Humans are.

Andi

Right. What humans do you think made it, it's more of the question than

Tanner

then,

Andi

what did humans make? Right. I would probably go with something like maybe number two, There are other post offices like, you know, there are post offices in like surprising weird places that are just like cutesy for fun and kind of like this one. And I can imagine people in other parts of the world would make them

Tanner

Yeah. And that one's so easy to be false. It could just be somewhere else,

Andi

Yeah. You

Tanner

could be another one Another one, Yeah, I do agree with you there, but I actually think it might be the restaurant's one. I think any place with Coast could have more, you know, maybe Australia has

Andi

cause it's, I don't think it's about the coast though. I think it's about who has the incentive to make money off of such a thing. You think

Tanner

it's the luxury

Andi

thing? Yeah. It's gotta be luxury because I mean like even the first one, because otherwise like the US would have a bunch and the US doesn't have a bunch. Right. the US doesn't really have a ton of luxury

Tanner

Mm-hmm.

Andi

could

Tanner

be on Hawaii. Maybe. China,

Andi

Maybe It's India right next door.

Sups

Yeah, Yeah. Who knows? yeah,

Tanner

Yeah.

Sups

Yeah.

Andi

some Yeah.

Sups

sure. Check.

Andi

I don't know. I don't know. No, that's what he's playing with. He's like, you guys should have known. How did you, I'll think of India. Yeah. I don't know. Mm-hmm.

Tanner

So

Andi

I think maybe I'll pick number two.

Tanner

Okay.

Sups

Okay. it's the Okay. So fact number two, and fact number three, One of you is right. It's actually fact number two. Vanuatu, the underwater post office is the first one.

Tanner

one.

Sups

And when they did it, there were several copycat

Andi

Mm-hmm.

Sups

post offices in Japan, in Norway, and in Malaysia. The world's deepest is located more than 130 feet underwater. Wow. But the one in Vanuatu is the first in the history. Yeah. Of underwater

Tanner

post And that one you can like snorkel to, right.

Sups

yes. yes. You

Tanner

below water. Just Nice. Wow. yeah,

Andi

see, yeah. It's too cute and easy of an idea. Yeah. Right? Like you can't just build a luxury dome. You can't build another water dome. You can't build a tunnel and you can't build a restaurant just real quick. Yeah.

Tanner

But

Andi

could put a post

Sups

office Yeah. Yeah. I mean,

Tanner

post offices, north Pole, Boston

Andi

and mountains.

Sups

I mean, they're everywhere. Well, China has a post office in the space, so

Tanner

Sure.

Andi

wow. Okay. Yeah. See.

Tanner

There you go. Cool. Nice way of figuring that

Sups

out.

Tanner

Easiest one to build. Hmm.

Andi

that's definitely what I was going for. I should have known.

Tanner

I should have known.

Andi

Thanks for listening to this episode of the I Should Have Known podcast. We'll be continuing with our under the sea theme for the rest of the month. and if you like this episode, could you please leave us a review And as always, thanks for listening. the fish is like, that's my cousin. You
